General Physical Description:
  • Grain Type/Shape: Flat, irregular slices or shreds (often called “Kibbled”).
  • Colour Varieties:
  • White Onion Flakes: Creamy white to pale ivory (the most popular for commercial use).
  • Red Onion Flakes: Dull red to brownish-purple.
  • Pink Onion Flakes: Light pink to tan.
  • Texture: Crisp, brittle, and dry. They soften and expand instantly when soaked in liquids.
  • Aroma & Flavour: Strong, pungent, and characteristic of fresh onion, often with a slightly sweet aftertaste due to concentrated natural sugars.
  • Size: Standard commercial flakes range from 8 mm to 15 mm, though “Minced” or “Chopped” versions can be smaller (3 mm to 5 mm).
