- Appearance: Fine to medium-sized granules, small crumbles, or meal. It is generally more uniform and less “flaky” than raw DOC.
- Colour: Varies from golden yellow to dark brown. A darker Colour is common in meal that has been toasted to reduce anti-nutritional factors, but an excessively dark Colour may indicate heat damage.
- Texture: Free-flowing and non-dusty. It is processed to be easy to mix with other grains in automated feed systems.
- Odour: Mildly nutty and characteristic. It should not smell of solvent (hexane), mold, or burnt organic matter.
- Purity: Should be free from foreign seeds (like castor or mahua), stones, and metal contaminants.
